Wet-on-Wet Basics

This demo will show how applying wet paint onto a wet paper surface creates soft, diffused edges and allows colors to blend organically.

  • Materials: Watercolor paper, brushes (round, medium size recommended), clean water, watercolor paints (2-3 colors that blend well), paper towel.
  • Steps:
    • Wet a section of the watercolor paper evenly with clean water using a brush. Ensure the paper is glistening but not puddling.
    • Load a brush with a diluted watercolor color and touch it to the wet area on the paper. Observe how the paint spreads and feathers.
    • Introduce a second color into the wet area, showing how the colors blend softly on the paper.
    • Control the spread by varying the wetness of the paper and the paint consistency.
    • Drop in more concentrated pigment into a wet area to create stronger bursts of color.
    • Allow the wash to dry to see the final soft effect.
